The only one of its kind!
I am fortunate to have a family background in the Indian restaurant industry as my father owns one of Britain’s renowned Indian Restaurants, The Brilliant in Southall, which has just recently won the title of “Best Indian Restaurant in London Suburbs 2007/8″ from the British Curry Awards.
Prince Charles also visited recently (9th November 2007) and said that “The Brilliant served some of the best Indian food he had ever eaten”. My father Gulu and his brother Kewal have been running the restaurant for 32 years and since then the restaurant has grown to a 250 seater and also has it’s own private banqueting suite, a license to hold Civil Marriages as well as a very successful outside catering business. The Brilliant Restaurant is a family run establishment serving North Indian Punjabi food with a Kenyan slant.
I have been working alongside my father at the restaurant for the past eight years and thoroughly enjoy it. I work as the assistant restaurant manager and love interacting with the guests, meeting new people and creating and experimenting new recipes and ideas alongside the team of chefs. My brother Shanker, who is the restaurant’s General Manger also plays an active role in the business. We both agree that although like any business, running a restaurant is not an easy challenge, however the outcomes and rewards fully compensate for all the hard work, time and effort that we put in to make it a successful and well recognised restaurant business.
I urge youngsters with family businesses in the hospitality industry to pursued careers in such industries and experience such benefits and rewards for themselves.
