What helps an upset stomach?

Bananas are said to help settle an upset stomach. Ginger is said to cure morning sickness and nausea.

How to lower cholesterol?

Firstly it is important to understand that there are two types of cholesterol (which people often confuse). One is found in food and the other is made in the body as its needed for metabolism. Both are fat like substances. Dietary cholesterol is contained is foods from animal sources (liver, egg yolks and prawns are especially high in cholesterol). To combat high cholesterol, eats lots of lentils, vegetables and fruits rich in pectin (e.g. grapefruit, apricots and prunes). Garlic is also said to help lower cholesterol as it contains compounds which suppress cholesterol production in the liver. Indian cookery frequently involves the use of garlic, so next time when cooking your ‘curry’ add half a clove extra garlic!

If you are diabetic:

Cut down on salt and salty foods, fried foods and fatty foods. Also cut down on sugary foods which raise blood sugar levels very quickly.

To combat digestion:

Eat more fresh fruit and vegetables and drink more water which will keep digested food residue moving through the system. Cut down on refined carbohydrates, fried fatty foods and alcohol which can cause inflammation of the stomach wall.

When suffering from heart disease:

Despite significant medical advances, coronary heart disease is still the single largest killer in the UK. Eating healthily is one of the most effective ways to help prevent heart disease. Eat more red, orange and green fruits, oats and pulses, oily fish, garlic to reduce blood cholesterol and green vegetables for B vitamins. Use vegetable oils (e.g. olive oil) as opposed to butter or ghee. Eat skinless poultry as opposed to fatty red meats, choose low fat yogurt or fromage frais instead of cream and regularly exercise!

If you have kidney problems:

Drink more water and eat more whole grain cereals for magnesium. Cut down on meat, fish and dairy produce. Avoid salt, sugar and alcohol.

If you have high blood pressure:

Cut down on salt, although at first it will feel peculiar, your taste buds will learn to adapt to a lower salt intake. Also cut down on smoked and pickled foods and drink less alcohol. Fresh fruit and vegetables also control blood pressure levels and celery is a food which has been proven to contain a chemical which lowers blood pressure.

To prevent a headache:

From my research I have found that eating plenty of fish can help prevent headaches! Interestingly ginger may also reduce headache pain!

To fight a fever:

‘Honey and haldi (turmeric) is the answer’ that’s what my nan always told me, it words for me! My dad however has a complete different opinion, he says ‘If you have a fever, you need a good hot curry to cure it’

Stroke prevention:

Tea is said to prevent the buildup of fatty deposits on artery walls. Drinking tea also suppresses the appetite and keeps the pounds from pilling on.

What is good for arthritis?

Anyone with arthritis should cut down on saturated animal fats, sugar and salt and eat more fresh fruit and vegetables. Salmon, tuna, mackerel and sardines (oily fish full of omega oils, which are good for the immune system) also help combat arthritis. A daily walk or swim will tone the muscles and reduce weight increase which puts strain on the joints.
